How to fix pain in the neck during a sit up

Some people experience neck pain while performing a sit-up or crunch.  This is likely because they are using the sternocleidomastoid muscles rather than the deep neck flexors. Because of this this is more strain in other areas like the muscles in the base of the skull (suboccipitals muscles).

To help prevent his pain push your tongue to the roof of your mouth and touch your teeth together.

If this doesn’t help then you may need to improve the endurance and strength of the  muscles of the neck so you can perform the sit up or crunch for longer periods of time.
